About this UKLand Demonstrator
This demonstrator provides a 20 x 20 km tile from the national UKLand database. The UKLand product provides this level of detail for the entire UK.
Created using a number of data sources, the core of the land use database was generated by digitising features from high resolution aerial photography.
The generic colours and terms used to describe the various land use types are shown in the classifcation chart below.
You can use your mouse to move around the map, use the mouse wheel to zoom in or use the buttons on the upper left.
Click on the boxes to the right to reveal mapping and imagery base layers.
The white text box in the upper left displays the land use class and area of the particular polygon under the cursor. Some large polygons, such as roads, water and agriculture are broken up into more managable units, so the area displayed is the area of that particular polygon .
The land use map is designed to be a 1:10,000 scale product and so disappears at an appropriate scale to avoid incorrect viewing of this database.
The minimum mappble unit is 100 x 100 m, so some small features, such as ponds, isolated buildings, tree stands may not be mapped and are incorproated into the surrounding land use class.
The satellite imagery and street mapping used as a back drop are not part of UKLand and are provded by Mapbox and their various suppliers.
